Hi,

Have you been wondering where we have been for so long? We relocated to Hong Kong.

We will be back to India but till then, stay tuned to join us in our exciting adventures in Hong Kong.

And for now, we have a new “show and tell” post. Our most viewed posts.

If you haven’t seen our show and tell posts before, do check them out on the blog. Start from the one on – Seasons.

The topic covered by the school on body parts and human body was very basic but, we took this opportunity to read and learn a bit more about the organs in our body.

We also got our doubts cleared from Dr.Vasanti Sajgure. Thank you Vasanti for all your help.

Kindly note that everything here is not expected by the child to perform in Show and tell but, a reference to basic facts is more than enough.

We chose to speak about basic four organs:

Brain

Heart

Lungs

Kidneys.

We also covered the digestive system in the body and a some information about Bones.

What did we use for this activity?

Humanbodyshowandtell-9

  • Informative books on Human body.
  • Color printouts of the information and graphics on body organs covered.
  • Magnets
  • Printout a shape of a human body using google.
  • Pipe cleaners : Blue and red
  • Skewers
  • Black marker pen
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Two dark colored card papers (Larger than A5 size)
  • A mount board (Same as card paper size)
  • Multi-color card paper notes

Humanbodyshowandtell-2

Steps

1) Cut out the shape of the body and stick it on to a colored card paper. (Side A)

2) Stick the card paper on a mount board for strength.

3) Repeat step 1 on the reverse side of the mount board using the second dark-colored card paper.  Add a heading – Human Body.

4) Cut-outs of the organs from the printed sheets to their basic shapes. Glue on some card paper to its reverse for strength, if required.

5) Stick on the magnets in the right positions of the organs. Add various other stickers as connected to the organ next to them.

6) Make simple notes in multi-color for the various organs you are covering and add the title and some relevant words on the outside. Add more detailed information about the organ on the inside of these notes. Stick them next to the relevant organs.

7) Attach magnets to the cut-outs of the organs. Use the magnet on the cut-out organ to adhere to the one stuck on the mount board human figure. The organs will get a lovely 3D effect.

8) Add the two pipe cleaners in red and blue to depict Arteries and veins respectively.

9) On the reverse side (Side B) where we have already pasted the body silhouette, add the cut-out of the digestive system and related stickers all around it.

Humanbodyshowandtell-6

10) Break the skewer and glue it on one of the legs to depict the hard bones.

11) Lastly, for easy understanding of “what is taken into our body and what is thrown out”, add a sketch using some punched shapes and printed papers. The terms are kept extremely simple here as it is meant only for the purpose of understanding more clearly the organ functions.

How to perform the show and tell?

SideAB

On Side A) Carry the cut-outs of the organs separately and neatly packed in a box. When asked to perform, the child should pick out one organ, stick it in the correct position, say a few words about that body organ.

For eg. The child starts with the organ: Brain. She sticks it in the correct position on the mount board where the magnet is placed. Now, she says a few words about where our brain is located and it’s primary function.

We had written the complete information inside the small notelets so that the teacher could guide or help the child. And the cover of the notelets just had help words.

Expectation: The child should be able to use the words related to the Brain as mentioned on the outer cover of each notelet. For eg. For Brain – She must identify the picture of brain, Use the word “Helps control” our body and mention nervous system or nerves.

On side B) The digestive system is already stuck on the mount board.

In easy sentences explain to the child how the digestive cycle works. Refer below for some help on this. You can touch upon Bones and muscles here too.

Notelet information for your easy reference

Brain: (Help words: Brain, Control, Nerves) – Our Brain is like a super computer. It controls our body. Nerves spread all over, help the brain to send and receive signals from other body organs.

Heart: (Help words: Heart, Blood, Veins, Arteries) – Heart pumps blood all over the body. Bad or impure blood comes to heart by veins and good or pure blood is sent from heart to all over our body by arteries. (The words Bad and Good are simpler for the child to understand.)

Lungs: (Help words: Lungs, air, oxygen, carbon dioxide) – The air we breathe goes to our lungs. Lungs help our body get oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from our body when we exhale.

Kidneys: (Help words: Kidney, Urine) Kidneys filter the blood received form the heart. The good nutrients go back to the body and unwanted waste is thrown out as urine or susu.

Bones: (Help words: Bones, muscles, skeleton) – Bones protect our internal organs. Bones of our body are collectively called skeleton. Muscles cover our bones and help join two bones together. Point where two bones meet is called a joint.

Digestive system: (Stomach, small intestine, large intestine) – Teeth help us grind food. The mushy paste goes to stomach via the food pipe. Here it becomes a soupy liquid and travels to small intestine, which is a long coiled tube. In small intestine the nourishing part goes back to blood and the waste goes to another tube, the large intestine. From here the waste is thrown out as faeces or potty or shi-shi. (Words like shi-shi which are commonly used by the child help in understanding and a child always has an attraction towards these words like potty. Right?)

We hope you have enjoyed this post and it will give you ideas for any show and tell in your school.

We will be seeing you more often now.

Keep in touch,
