Hi All,
Just a few days to go for Diwali and if your family holidays have already started, you can do some of these simple crafts.
For most of the crafts, I may have used a scalloped circle or a pinking design circle punch, however, you can also do these with simple circles. They will still look great.
Ecofriendly Diwali cards
Requirements:
A brown paper bag, scissors, a white card paper, a piece of cardboard, Paints, Glue, Black felt pen, paper punch and some satin ribbon.
Steps:
1. Let your child paint freely on the card paper. Jus ensure the right festive colors are present. So, try to avoid black.
2. Use the piece of cardboard and draw a lamp on it. Cut it to make a stencil as in the photo.
3. Cut out the lamps from the painted white card paper.
4. Cut the mouth of the brown paper bag & stick these colorful cut outs of the lamps onto them.
5. Add your border with black dots or dashes. Add your Happy Diwali message & if you want, add a satin ribbon for more festive look.
Diwali decoration with tea lights
Guess, what I found in a local exhibition? These plastic fibers, in various colors and just for Rupees fifty. So take a glass bowl and dip these in it. Add water and add a tea light candle for a lovely floating candle decoration.
Rangoli
Now, comes the fun part. Some people may think I am crazy and I am 🙂
Few months ago, I bought some hot plates and tea coasters for gifting. I had no idea then that I would use them like this but, here is a simple rangoli made out of them. Yes, you guessed it right, I cannot draw a good traditional Rangoli and hence rely on some such ideas. Just arrange them the way you want to 🙂 and they look great.
You can also refer Gems rangoli made last year. You can buy the gems from any local craft shops.
Toran
Coaster Toran [ Sounds like I coined a new term 🙂 ]
More fun part, I used these coasters also to make some fun and quick Toran. Just string them up the way you want to. Unfortunately there is not enough light on the door to get a good striking picture for you.
Ok. So if you have a smile on your face now, some more quick Toran crafts for you.
Glitter foam toran
Requirements:
3″ Scalloped circle punch, Different colored glitter foam sheets or punched foam circles, Thread, scissors, green glitter foam sheet, A pin, A cross-stitch needle.
Steps:
1. Once you have the punched circles, draw some leaves on the back side of green glitter foam sheet and cut them out.
2. Use a pin and make two holes on each of the flowers and the leaves. Make a toran string by using the needle and thread.
The colorful toran can be used for your kids rooms and if you like traditional colors then use Yellow & Orange glitter foam papers.
Traditional saffron toran
Requirements:
3″ Scalloped circle punch, Bright orange handmade paper (or use velvet paper), green card paper, a black pen, string, cross-stitch needle, scissors and a pin.
Steps are the same as before. Just remember to use any foam sheet below the handmade papers to make a hole using the pin. Refer the photograph attached. If you directly try to stitch using a blunt needle, the paper may tear. This looks almost like the original flower toran. The handmade paper gives it the right texture and wrinkly appearance to make it look great. If you can find glitter handmade paper, it would look all the more awesome but, personally, I love this original look, just the way it is 🙂
Mini toran for the mandir
When we have lovely toran on our doors, why not for our mandir at home.
Requirements:
1″ Pinking circle punch, velvet paper yellow and orange, green card paper, black pen, simple string, pin, needle and thread as before.
Steps are the same as before but, here choose a length of the thread suitable to your mandir. Remember, make holes in the card paper by holding the card paper on any foam piece & then pinning it.
Lantern craft
Requirements:
3″ Scalloped punch, Different card papers, 1″ Scalloped square punch, Golden or silver papers, scissors, glue, paper punch, string and small rectangular glitter foam pieces.
Steps:
1. Keep the punched circles and squares ready.
2. Refer the second photo in above collage and see how the pink part is cut. Draw two lines using a pencil through the centers roughly but, do not cut right up to the center. Stick this on to the main circle.
3. Attach the square and the rectangular above and below as shown in the photo.
4. Take a rectangular card paper piece of the same width as matching to your lantern and cut strips along the length of it. Do not cut all the way. See in photo. Paste this piece to make your lantern’s ribbons.
5. Decorate with silver or golden paper, Punch holes and attach a string.
These lantern’s can make very nice car hangings. Your car will also then be part of your festive spirit 🙂 or, you can hang these on both sides of your door to welcome Diwali or you can make a lantern toran 🙂
Mini Lantern
This one is made from a one inch circle punch so it is very small. It can be attached to a key chain.
Why am I obsessed with mini? May be because my daughter loves everything to be in pairs of mamma and baby 🙂
I hope you have enjoyed all these craft ideas and you will be able to multiply them and have so many more of your own.
Do share with us if you like them or tried them or have any more ideas for us.
Have a lovely Diwali.
Best wishes,
Poornima
Really cute ideas for Diwali…my personal favorites are tea light holders and your cute rangoli… 🙂
Thanks Priti.
Madam,
One of My friend liked your Diwali Cards a lot. He needs 20 Cards (customised).
Are you willing to sell them?
Hi Dushyant, It’s a very simple idea. Drop me an email on my email address of what is needed. I saw this comment now so I guess, it is late if he wants to post it. Let me know if still interested 🙂 So glad to get a positive feedback 🙂 Poornima
All awesome ideas!!! I second Shruti, please put bigger pictures. It makes the craft more clear and looks striking as well!
Yes Swapna, will try. Might need your help though. Remember how I sorted out the stretched photo on my home page? It was by reducing the size of the pic – now I am having a phobia 🙁
Great ideas. Simply loved the coaster toran :).
Thanks Pooja. Easy too 🙂 Just shared from your blog to my FB timeline 🙂
wish had half your talent… so inspirational
Pooja, You know really I do not think of myself as talented in craft. I love my own ideas 🙂 and then I try to implement them but, secretly I wish one could be paid only for ideas 🙂 Your sweet comment just made my day.
very pretty!
Thanks Rachana
You rangoli looks so cute!
Thanks Priti. What to do? I am not so good in traditional rangoli 🙁
