Today’s topic is: How do we celebrate Diwali? or Celebrating Diwali.

When we started working on this, I realized that it was such a vast topic. The interesting stories of Diwali, why we celebrate it?, Why do we worship Goddess Lakshmi? and all the things that we do during Diwali.

Now, how to put all this on a single sheet of paper? We really did not know how it was going to work out but, we started with few google images. This post would give you many simple, individual ideas for Diwali crafts. Take a look.

Note: Most of the pictures and gems are stuck with a double-sided tape. This gives the pictures a 3D effect.

We decided it was important to cover at least briefly what is Diwali?

Also, a mention on why do we celebrate it, before moving on to, how to celebrate it.

Also the names of the Diwali days would be slightly difficult for the child to mention but, when you put it down on the chart, it means they get read at least a couple of times. So, the child may not say the word “Dhanteras” but when someone else says it, they will associate it with Diwali.

These names are simply written on the chart paper. The remaining information is not mentioned in line with these days. We wanted to keep it simple and use images to just trigger words related to Diwali.

So, what comes to mind when we say Diwali? If your child is near you, ask him or her and check if we have covered all the points in our chart. If not, please do let us know what we could have added more.

1) Light Lamps.

We used brown paper to cut lamp shapes and just attached tiny orange gems for the flames. It looked quite simple and beautiful.

2) Send Happy Diwali greetings.

This was a mini card stuck on the card sheet. When you see the whole picture, check if you can locate this one.

3) Clean your home and adorn the door with a toran.

My daughter loved the strings of lights made form gemstones and was asking if we would put up similar ones in our home too. Simple circles in yellow and orange signify marigold flowers with the mango leaves in our traditional toran.

4) Decorate with Rangoli.

Simple gems stuck in a design with glue. Don’t they look bright and welcoming?

5) Light up your home with a lantern and strings of lights.

This lantern was a part of our last year’s post, Simple, quick and fun Diwali crafts.

6) Burst fire crackers.

We attached some pictures and made simple cracker burst lines with glitter glue tubes.  A simple rocket, quite like the Diwali Dhamaka blog hop image below. This Diwali try making fire cracker crafts instead of actually bursting those crackers.

7) Buy new clothes.

8) For moms: Make Diwali specials – Laddoos, Chakli, Chivda and Shakkarpala.

For kids: Eat them with relish.

9) Lakshmi Pooja

One of the highlights of Diwali is Lakshmi Pooja where we worship Goddess Lakshmi and pray to her to usher in prosperity in our homes and in our lives.

10) Bhau Beej or Bhai Dooj

A day to “Aukshan” our brothers and exchange gifts with them. This day marks the end of Diwali. Hope you will also have a fabulous Diwali this year and be able to experience all the goodness of Diwali.
