Dear Readers,

Here is a list of picture books we love. We have tried to categorize them into books suitable for Pre-Nursery, Nursery, Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2.

Today’s post is for the Second category. If you have any recommendations for us, do let us know in comments below.

1.Kipper’s Monster by Mick Inkpen.

Kipper the Dog is a character in a series of books consisting of 34 titles. It has been made into animation series. All the characters in this series are delightful. A must-read for Pre-schoolers.

2.One Ted falls out of Bed by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Anna Currey.

This book is brilliant for bedtime, and the rhyming story is fun to read. Ted has fallen out of bed. Will he ever get back up? You’ll enjoy the adventure all the way through. In this book, counting theme is woven perfectly into a magical, rhythmic text. Illustrations are delightful.

3.Elmer and Grandpa Eldo by David McKee

Elmer the elephant is a beautiful series by David McKee. A delightful read. This particular book highlights the bond between Grandpa & Elmer.

4.The Little Frog or Nanha Mendhak by Ranjitham Paul and illustrated by T.R Rajesh

Little Frog” or “Nanha Mendhak” is a bilingual book by Tulika books. The story is about a little frog who is waiting for Rain. The book is ideal to teach “Days of the week” with a story and of course the life cycle of a frog.

5. Llama Llama Red Pyjama by Anna Dewdeney

This rhyming short story is perfect for little children getting ready for bed. The pictures are colorful and portray the difficulties of bedtime exactly. The different singalong versions are good too.

6. Lost & Found by Oliver Jeffers

Lost and Found is a story about friendship that will please children and grown-ups alike. An endearing story with lovely pictures. Oliver Jeffers has written many other children’s books too.

7.Hooray for Fish by Lucy Cousins

Revel in all things fishy in this undersea riot of color and rhyme. Paddle along with Little Fish on a mesmerizing underwater tour of friends spotty and stripy, happy and gripy, hairy and scary, even curly whirly and twisty twirly. Beautiful, colorful book with simple story line teaching adjectives and an awareness about diversity amongst all of us.

8. Shapers Capers by Cathryn Falwell

Excellent book on shapes. The illustrations will make the children think on how the various shapes are part of our daily lives.

9. Kulapati Gajapati by Ashok Rajagopalan

What happens when Gajapati Kulapati catches a mighty big cold? Simple text and simply delightful pictures. This Tulika book is available in many languages. Also, there are many references to the daily life in India. It helps Children identify when they see a real banana seller or a postman.

10.Tea with Grandpa by Barney Saltzberg

A charming and heartwarming story about keeping up relationships in our day and age. This book proves that no matter how far we are from family we can always find ways to spend time together.

11.The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler

The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson is in the Top Ten Timeless Picture Books To Treasure Forever. The Gruffalo story has a nice message children relate to. When a good character wins with a trick it’s even sweeter! Read the book to discover what happens when the quick-thinking mouse comes face to face with an owl, a snake and a hungry Gruffalo. It also has a fantastic sequel, “The Gruffalo’s child”. Do take a look at that too.

12. Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler

Can butterfly help little monkey find his mum? Yes, finally, but only after a lot of trial and error as butterfly misunderstands monkey’s descriptions and leads him to all sorts of unsuitable animals. Monkey Puzzle is a charming jungle tale with the hallmark rhyming text and lively illustrations. Children simply love the animal illustrations and feel all the emotions that the little monkey feels.
