Dear Kids & Moms,
As you know we supply theme based craft kits to Little Readers’ Nook. (If you want to know more about our craft kits, visit Creative bits.)
For their theme on sharing is caring, we came across this book and bought it, Elmer and Grandpa Eldo.
It was the first time I saw Elmer, the patchwork elephant and I fell in love with him.
I read the story over and over again and secretly, I must tell you, I think I liked it more than Aruja. 🙂
It is the story of how Elmer visits his Grandpa and how they spend their time remembering the fun times they have had together.
Isn’t this necessary in our lives too? Instead of remembering the sad moments, I think it would bring so much positivity to remember only the fun times.
However, first, it is necessary to create memories.
So start today. I think you read this “To-do list” posted a few days back on our page. Did you start?
The story portrays a wonderful relation that Elmer shares with Grandpa Eldo.
This is so true. Each child has a special relationship with his or her grandparents. They are the ones who love unconditionally and have the patience and time to deal with their energy levels. 🙂 Honestly, I sometimes think that when our grandparents come over, they get an extra energy boost only by meeting my little girl. And many of us visit our grandparents in much the same way that Elmer does.
There were just so many simple parts of the story which touched a chord. Like when Elmer remembers to take along his grandpa’s favorite fruits.
He wants to meet his grandpa and just spend some time with him. What a delight it must have been for Eldo.
And how Elmer chases Eldo. All grandparents should sometimes stop being grown ups and be a child again.
David McKee’s illustrations are superb. I don’t think I could imagine colorful trees as superbly as he has done and the illustrations beckon the children. I read a bit about Elmer and guess what I found?
Elmer was born in 1968 and there are just SO MANY books on Elmer. Check them out here – Elmer, the patchwork elephant.
We also enjoyed our craft so much. Little pieces of felt cut perfectly and stuck in a line to make the most lovable patchwork elephant EVER. Here is a picture.
Oh yes, before we end, also check out this Elmer animation. Once again kudos to the message this animated story gives us. To cherish our diversity.
AND a lovely, free activity page here.
Elmer has been a delightful read with an enriching message.
Do let us know if you liked our craft and also if you have any other Elmer book to recommend to us.
Enjoy reading,
Poornima
