Hi,

It was a holiday for our holi festival and I was racking my brains for an activity to do with my daughter. As it was a festival of colors, I needed a colorful one. I had seen this a number of times and really wanted to do it.

So, this particular day we set out with all our gear and I wanted to surprise my little one with this new crayon effect. What happened next? Read on to find out.

PS.: Just a hint: It didn’t turn out the way we thought it would.

This is us, getting our act together. We have the necessary items in place. The wax crayons all taped together, an easel, a canvas, scissors, some waste paper and a hair dryer. This activity definitely needs parental guidance. Be careful of the hot melted wax and during the use of the hair dryer.

To start, tape the crayons as shown to the easel. Keep waste paper around the easel. Use the hair dryer to heat the crayons and make them melt and leak along the easel.

What we didn’t know was that the hair dryer would make the paint splatter! Also the heat made the crayons leaky. And we absolutely did not have any idea how to guide the crayons in the right way down. I am thankful that it was a mini easel and we did have some waste papers as a cover. Here are some splatters.

And then we just put the crayons on the easel as above and simply heated them randomly using the hair dryer. We kept running them up and down spreading the color. The melting wax gave such a lovely texture and color to the canvas. I loved it.

We had some broken pieces of crayons and we added them to our canvas. Here is the final one.

Alas, I first had to deal with Aruja’s tears because Mama had spoiled her crayons and then she got into the groove. She loved the feel of the canvas paper. She just rubbed her crayons all over the canvas randomly. This was the background and we once again tried the leaking effect with the glass deco colors which we had. They were more runny.  Here’s what we managed.

And finally when I was away for five whole minutes the little monkey had tried her hand at another canvas and used up her favorite BLACK glass deco color onto it along with other colors. She managed to spill it and make a mess.

Yes, I am not a calm person. All in all we did have a colorful day.

And now you know, we might do good kids crafts but painting is definitely our area of improvement. We promise to keep trying though because we love it.

What activity did you do recently?

Do share a spoonful of your ideas with us too. 🙂

Love,

Poornima
