Hi,
Today is 1000 Voices for Compassion Day! I found, I wanted to be a part of this wonderful campaign too and here I am.
When a word like compassion strikes you and you have to write about it, you wonder, what that word means to you? I started reading some of the posts written on compassion, I watched some videos and I read some books for children but, all in all it made me deeply uncomfortable. Why?
It reminded me of the times when I had not been compassionate! I may have been sympathetic, I may have been kind, I may have had the best intentions in place but, I was not compassionate in my responses.
It made me feel guilty but, then I realized, feeling guilty is not bad! It’s good. It means, my heart still beats the right way, my mind still thinks positive thoughts and I can hope for a change.
Do you sometimes feel guilty too?
Everyday we read about stories of abuse, violence, hatred and I wonder about my child’s future. It is imperative that we start teaching our children about being kind, being compassionate, being considerate from an early age. It will go a long way to make this world a better place.
I would like to share with you some books which teach about some form of compassion.
Nothing says it better than stories.
1) Bear feels sick by Karma Wilson is a story about a bear who falls sick. His friends help him get better. What happens next? Just watch the video and you will know why you need to show it to your child too.
2) Elmer and Eldo by David McKee. We have a review on this book and if you read it you will understand why we chose this book. It reflects such a lovely bond between Elmer and his Grandpa. Click here if you want to read it.
3) Peppa pig is my daughter’s favorite character. This animation has a story about how Pedro pony gets cough and soon everyone gets cough and even the doctor sometimes.
4) Sharing a shell by Julia Donaldson is a story about three friends who stay in a shell and decide that they do not want to stay together. They need their space. What do they discover? See this video to get a glimpse of this lovely book.
5) Your turn now by Lubaina Bandukwala is a FunOKPlease book which talks about kindness. We are yet to read all the stories but, basically it teaches children that just a simple act of kindness is a reward in itself.
Kindness is best repaid with kindness. The blue card is passed on from one person to another. It says, “Your turn now.”
So, Have you have enjoyed reading our post on compassion?
Hopefully you have watched at least one of the above videos and liked one or more books we recommended for you.
It’s YOUR TURN NOW.
Love,
Poornima

Stories are definitely one of the best ways to teach our kids to be compassionate!
Thanks for always being there Roshni. You supported a lovely cause. Thanks. I felt good being a part of it.
I actually did love the first story and the Peppa Pig one. I loved how you said that we all have been kind but not compassionate, but at least we are making amends. A lovely post, Poornima.
Thanks so much for leaving such a beautiful comment. Yes, You understand about the “being kind” part. 🙂
The stories are really so simple and they have such a deep, lovely meaning. Exactly right for young kids.
Loved the stories Poornima…I hope this great cause creates an awareness among people about this much needed emotion called Compassion. 🙂
Read my short story written for this cause and do leave your valuable feedback. 🙂
